PLAYOFFS

March 29, 2011 - Seals (W 5-4 (so))

Surge faced off against the number seed Seals in a game to decide which team would reach the Lightning Championship round from the winner's bracket.  It took Surge's best game of the season to beat the Seals in the one and only regular season contest and it took overtime and 4 rounds of a shootout to determine a winner in this playoff tilt.  Mike Rizz got Surge going early scoring 2 goals on the first shift of the game, with linemates Bob Miller and Andy assisting on both.   The stunned Seals  were on their heals as Surge carried the play most of the first period.  A late period goal by Seals star Danny Buckingham gave them new life.  Buckingham, a member of Surge at the 2002 CHE tournament in Montreal was being double-shifted as the Seals rolled 4 lines against Surge's 3.  The opportunistic Seals scored 2 more in the second before Mike scored his third of the game to tie it at 3.  A blown offsides call led to a partial Buckingham breakaway and the Seals' 4th goal of the game early in the third.  Surge struggled breaking out, as the Seals continued an aggressive forechecking system with their defense crashing Surge wingers on the half boards.  Gregg stepped it up and would not surrender another goal in live play.  With 6 minutes left in regulation Murph Jr. rushed the puck up the wing and found an open Andy, who fed to Mike, who netted his 4th of the game.  The Seals were awarded a powerplay with 0:52 to go.  Surge defense clamped down and the penalty killers didn't allow a shot before the buzzer sounded to end regulation.  The Seals started the 5 minute overtime period on the powerplay but were unable to capitalize.  Overtime ended without a winner and the game would be decided by a shootout.  Bob Miller was first to go and scored when he lost control of the puck, but it slid through the Seals goalie's pads.   Buckingham went first for the Seals and scored but that would be the last biscuit to get behind Greg.  Mike's deke and backhand attempt was stopped, but both Andy and Murph Jr. snapped off wrist shots to beat the Seals' goalie top corner stick side.  Gregg shutdown the Seals' 4th round shooter's backhand attempt and sent Surge to the Championship series in the driver's seat as the winner's bracket winner.

March 21, 2011 - Titans (W 3-2 (ot))

With only 2 points separating 1st and 3rd in the Lightning Division, you had to figure it will be a tight playoff race and so it was in Surge's first playoff game of the 2011 season.  Third place Surge was matched up against the 2nd place Titans.  The Titans held the regular season advantage but in both wins had had the advantage of abbreviated games; the first when their goalie walked into the rink with 21 seconds remaining in the first period and the second when an altercation combined with incompetent officiating burned more than 10 minutes of the third period.  This time, when the Titans launched their early game charge, the Surge defense shut them down.  And when called upon and it mattered, Gregg came up big.  The Dan, Bob and Mike line peppered the Titans net minder all night and was responsible for all 3 Surge scores.  Nevertheless, the Titans scored first off a turnover in the defensive zone.  Dan's wrist shot low stick side tied it up in the first and Bob's first of the night gave Surge the 2-1 lead in the second.  The Titans tied it early in the third, when a turnover at the defensive blue line led to a breakaway.  All 3 Surge lines had chances to score the go ahead goal in the third, including Murph Sr. who drove to the slot on his backhand, wheeled and fired a shot top corner.  The Titans goalie stabbed the puck to make one of several stellar saves as the third period wound down.  Early in the overtime period, the Titans found themselves with one of the best scoring chances of the night as the puck bounced to a wide open Titan in the slot.  Gregg flashed out the glove and robbed 'em.  Inspired by the great save, the Dan, Bob and Mike line took the ice and put on a spectacular display of tenacious fore checking and cycling, culminating with Mike finding Bob open in the slot who netted the game winner 2:36 into overtime.

REGULAR SEASON

March 7, 2011 - Red Army (W 5-4)

February 28, 2011 - Titans (L 3-6)

February 24, 2011 - Bucs (W 6-5)

If you weren't there, you missed one of the best comebacks in Surge history.  In the final 4 minutes, Surge rallied with 3 even strength goals to bag the Bucs.  In the first period, the Bucs cashed in on the powerplay and held a 0-2 lead at the first intermission.  In the second period, Greg Doherty muscled one in to cut the lead in half, but the Bucs answered quickly to regain the 2 goal lead.  The 1-3 lead was again cut in half early in the third when Bob Miller popped one in.  Again, the Bucs answered moments later to push the lead back to 2.  With 12 minutes to go, Murph scored his first goal of the game only to be answered by the Bucs a minute later.  It was the third time the Bucs answered a Surge goal a minute later with a goal of their own to maintain a 2 score lead.  The 3-5 score looked like it might stand as the line of Mike Rizz, Bob Miller and Joe McCarthy produced a multitude of scoring opportunities only to be stymied by the stellar play of the Bucs netminder.  There was 4:08 left in the game and a faceoff to drop in the attacking zone when Surge used their timeout.  Fran lost the draw but out hustled the Bucs defenseman to the puck and chipped it back to Domenic, who found Greg Doherty open in the high slot.  Greg dug the puck out of his feet and put a shot on net that found its way through the goaltenders' skates and across the goal line.  The ensuing center ice faceoff was won back to the Surge defense who dumped it in.  It was like deja vu.  The puck was chipped back to Domenic who again found Greg in the high slot.  Greg's hat trick maker was an on ice shot that went through the Buc's goalie's skates and rang the back of the net like a gong.  The game was tied at 5. The Bucs were deflated and Surge was like a shark who smelled blood.  Surge was determined to win.  And  no one was more determined than Murph, who had 2 impressive rushes in the game's final minute.  As the clock ticked down, he picked up the puck at the top of the faceoff circle and wristed one, beating the Bucs goalie top corner for the game winner with 3 seconds left.

February 15, 2011 - Dabeers (L 3-4)

Another light bench and a slow start contributed to another Surge loss.  Mike Rizz figured in all 3 Surge scores with 2 goals and an assist.  The first goal was scored when Mike found Steve Cookson alone in the high slot.  Steve fired a blazing one-timer that the Dabeers goalie had no chance at. The second goal was scored when Mike picked up a pass in the neutral zone, split the D and finished with a backhander to the top corner, stick side.  Down 4-2 with 4:36 left, Surge called a timeout and responded on the ensuing faceoff.  Bob Miller won it back to Mike who rang it in off the post.  With a minute to go, Surge found themselves on the power play. Gregg was pulled for the extra attacker and Surge was able to apply all kinds of pressure, with a multitude of shots.  The Dabeers goalie survived the onslaught and made the one goal lead stand.

February 9, 2011 - Lucky Dawgs (L 6-11)

A light bench and a tough opponent were the ingredients for the licken Surge took at the paws of the Lucky Dawgs.  It was a closer game than the score might imply as it was Surge's best goal production in 6 games. A chip shot goal with 3/10ths of a second remaining in the first period gave the Lucky Dawgs a 4-1 lead.  Led by the heroics of Joe McCarthy (4 goals on the night), Surge managed to tie the game at 5 early in the third, but fell behind again a few minutes later.  The Lucky Dawgs scored an empty net goal with 1:24 left to make the score 6-9 and 2 more before buzzer ended it.

January 31, 2011 - Harbormen (W 5-2)

With the help from a couple new faces, a couple familiar faces and Bob Barrett back on the blue line, Surge returned to its winning ways at Rockland's Bavis Arena Monday night, one of only 2 games this regular season not scheduled for Pilgrim Arena.  It took only 8 seconds for Surge to take the lead in a game whose outcome was never in doubt.  Jordie picked up the loose puck on the opening faceoff and dished it to Bob Miller.  Bob made a move around the Harbormen defensemen and fed a perfect pass to Greg Doherty who scored his first of 2 goals going hard to the net, finishing with a simple "stiff stick" tap in. Richie filled in for Gregg defending the Surge goal and his counterpart did a great job of keeping the score respectable at the other end.  Bermy, Mike and Joe McCarthy scored the other goals for Surge and Jordie, Bob Miller and Fran each tallied 2 assists.

January 25, 2011 - Road Rippers (L 3-7)

Surge dropped a second game in a row falling to the Road Rippers who successfully defended their first place standing in the Rangers (B2) Division.  It was also the second game in a row without standout defenseman, Bob Barrett.  The return to the line-up of Jordan (Early Ferry) Cookson, Jim (Akin Back) Kennedy, Dan (Gotta Plow) Geagan and Steve (Golden Gloves) Murphy Jr. was unquestionably welcome,  but not enough to topcoat the  team speed  of the Road Rippers.

January 17, 2011 - FNB (L 1-4)

A short bench took its toll as FNB handed Surge its first loss of the new year and ended its winning streak at 5.  Richie was solid, filling in between the pipes, in a game that was marred by cheap shots, especially by the FNB defenseman with a mullet and no front teeth.   Bob Mecagni got tossed for his efforts when he stepped in and wrestled with the goon.  The loan goal for Surge was scored by Danny when he poked the puck through the FNB defense in the neutral zone, walked in and  slid a backhander under the sprawling goaltender.

Get this . . . Although it was not originally known at game time, FNB had just been moved down a level.  Go figure.

January 10, 2011 - Casper Club (W 3-1)

Surge took it to another level taking down arguably its toughest opponent of the season, Casper Club of the Rangers Division.  Casper Club poured it on from the initial drop of the puck and dominated most of the first period.  Surge survived the initial onslaught, eventually catching its stride late in the first period.  Bob Barrett found an open Greg Doherty who slammed home the one-timer from the back door.  Casper Club's best chance to even the game came late in in the 2nd, when awarded a penalty shot.  Gregg gave 'em nuthin and the shooter's wrist shot went wide.  Four and a half minutes into the 3rd period, Bob Miller walked in and scored on a wrister that went 5 hole.  5 minutes later on the penalty kill, Mike Rizz picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, deeked the goalie and lifted a backhand into the twine.  Casper Club got its one and only goal of the game with 3 and a half left, on a backhander through a screen, that found its way through Gregg's 5 hole.

January 4, 2011 - Seals (W 4-1)

Surge tightened its grip on first place in the NESHL Lightning Division defeating a very fast 2nd place Seals team, 4 to 1.  It wasn't until midway through the second period before Jimmy Gately broke open the scoreless game giving Surge the one goal lead which they took into the third period.  Danny Ericson scored his first of the game, the eventual game winner, early in the third.  The Seals stopped the clock with 6:30 left after Gregg took a rising shot just under the mask which left a one inch gash on his collar bone.  Shortly thereafter, the Seals jumped on a bouncing puck to cut the lead in half.  Dom took the initiative to change up the lines a bit, putting the line of Mike, Jimmy and Danny together, who immediately gave the Seals fits.  The Seals hopes for a comeback were quickly dashed when Danny Ericson wheeled in the low slot and beat the Seals goalie with an on-the-ice-wrister skimming the post on the glove side.  With the Seals on their heals, Bob Miller transitioned a turnover into the back breaking fourth goal for Surge.

December 28, 2010 - P Hawks (W 4-2)

A few more bodies helped the P Hawks put forth an effort significantly better than the prior week, but still fell short to Surge.  Bob Mecagni scored the first goal of the game and his first goal of the season on a slapper from the point.  Dan Ericson assisted on Bob's goal and scored 2 goals of his own. The defensive foursome of Keith, Barrett, Fran and Mecagni  were solid in front of Gregg in his welcome return to the net, after recovering from an undisclosed lower body injury.  The P Hawks tried to narrow the gap pulling their goalie with 2 minutes left, but a good team  effort and some clutch saves by Gregg made the 2 goal lead stand.  Final score Surge 4  P Hawks 2

December 21, 2010 - P Hawks (W 8-0)

With Gregg spending another night on the shelf, Steven stepped up and delivered a goose egg as Surge stunned the P Hawks 8-0.  Defense was solid throughout.  Bob Miller overcame a bloody nose and scored 2 goals, as did Greg Doherty.  Mike Rizzitano got his first goal of the season and Jimmy Gately led all scorers in his second game with Surge posting 2 goals and 3 assists.

December 13, 2010 - FNB (W 3-1)

After both teams took turns forfeiting to one another, a game between Surge and FNB was finally played in the 2010-2011 season.  It was a tight one.  Surge built up a 3-0 lead before FNB rallied in the third.  John put himself in position to make the saves he needed to make three Surge goals good enough for the win.  Final score  Surge 3  FNB 1

December 6, 2010 - FNB (Forfeit L 0-1)

All Patriots fans have the night off to enjoy the Pats - Jets game on Monday Night Football as both teams bring their 10-2 records into a battle for first place in Northeast Division.  All Jets fans are asked to show up to the rink 1 hour early.   Surge forfeits.

November 29, 2010 - Titans (L 2-6)

An abbreviated game courtesy of the "newly enhanced" NESHL No Goalie Rule and the Titans goalie who avoided the forfeit by entering the building with 21 seconds remaining in the unplayed first period. The Titans goalie finally made it on the ice and the game got started with 6:40 left in the second period.  From that point, the Titans wasted no time, scoring on their first 3 shots.  That was all it took as Surge could only muster 2 goals of their own.  Final score Titans 6  Surge 2.

November 8, 2010 - Red Army (W 5-4)

With a short bench and Steve Jenner between the pipes, Surge hung on for the 5-4 victory over a spirited Red Army team.  Surge took a 4-0 lead into the third on the sloppy ice of Pilgrim Arena.  Little did we know the early third period goal to make it 5-0 would turn out to be the game winner.
